The History of Riverchase

(The little neighborhood way out in the middle of nowhere)
by Carolyn Mason

In The Beginning
Red fox and deer roamed freely on the land where Riverchase now stands. The Waugh family owned the land and Henry Waugh worked with several builders to develop the first home in Riverchase. IN the fall of 1982, John and Nell Dodson and Robbye and Harry Cole moved into their homes on Trenton Drive. Following them were Becky and Ken Strickland, Dr. Tim and Stephanie McGhee, Eleanor Thomas, Jane Morris and Bill and Emily Deal. Neighbors still reported seeing fox and deer roaming in the woods surrounding the homes. Wild horses one come galloping down Trenton Drive.

Traditions
The Riverchase tradition go hospitality and entertaining began. The McGhees set the first tradition of decorating with white Christmas lights the day after Thanksgiving. Christmas Eve, luminaries were set out in front of the homes. Ronnie Whitaker soon arranged for Santa to come visit. Jane Morris began a small Halloween parade that would end in her front yard complete with a witch’s brew and goodies. Monmouth was the next street to be finished and the little neighborhood way out in the middle of nowhere began to grow.
Mike Reilly was one of the first neighborhood association residents and he had to decide such issues as where to hold the next football party. There were adult volleyball games at Verner Elementary School, spring and fall cocktail parties, foot ball parties and Christmas parties. As the neighborhood grew like kudzu, some of the traditions just got bigger. It now takes several truck loads of sand to fill the thousands of bags needed for luminaries on Christ Eve and a living Nativity Scene has been enacted on Yorktown Drive for several years.

Mother Nature
There have three tree official snowstorms and several light dustings of snow. Two homes burned after being struck by lightning. Violent storms have snapped dozens of pine trees and strewn debris and tree limbs.

New Additions
The Verner Elementary School PTA built the “Field of Dreams” in 1993 with Tom and Denise Downs as the leaders along with dozens of Riverchase residents. The playground, built during one of the snowstorms, provides an easily accessible playscape for ht children of Riverchase. Northridge High School in now located next to Verner and several streets in Riverchase are expanding.
